Clothing Is a Write-Off If I Wear It to Work

Money Myths & Tax Facts Series – Ford & Associates

“If I wear it to work, I can deduct it, right? It’s basically a uniform.”

If we had a dollar for every time someone asked this while gesturing at a fabulous blazer or fresh pair of kicks… well, we still couldn’t write those off either.

The CRA doesn’t care how work-appropriate, stylish, or confidence-boosting your clothes are. If it’s everyday clothing, it’s not deductible—even if you only wear it at work.

The taxman has no time for fashion. (And probably wears beige.)

Branded T-shirts (unless it’s a uniform for employees—not yourself)

Dry cleaning for regular clothing

That suit you bought “just for client meetings”

Unless the clothing meets specific criteria, it’s a personal expense—even if it helps you look the part.

Protective gear required for safety: steel-toed boots, hard hats, gloves

Distinct uniforms with company branding (required to be worn)

Costumes for performers, actors, or drag artists (yes, really!)

Specialized clothing for specific occupations (e.g., lab coats, coveralls)

In short: unless you’re dressing like a welder, a surgeon, or a mascot… CRA probably sees it as personal.

If you run a performance-based business (hello, entertainers, stylists, or public speakers), talk to us. There are a few scenarios where clothing can be part of the gig—but don’t assume your designer shoes qualify just because you clicked “LinkedIn Mode.”

😂 Tax Chuckle of the Week:

Q: Why did the accountant return his Gucci loafers? A: Because the CRA said they didn’t fit the deduction code.

✅ Ford & Associates Pro Tip:

When you’re building your deduction list, ask:

“Is this item required only for work, or could I wear it to brunch?” If the answer is brunch, keep the receipt—but skip the write-off.
