Every Trip Is a Business Trip If I Bring My Laptop

“If I bring my laptop, it counts as a business trip. Deducted!”
Ah yes, the classic “carry-a-laptop-and-it’s-a-write-off” logic.
According to this school of thought, dragging your MacBook to Mexico and replying to one email at the swim-up bar makes your resort stay 100% deductible. (Nice try.)
CRA doesn’t hand out tax breaks for vacations with vibes. For a trip to qualify as a business expense, it must have a clear business purpose—not just a laptop-shaped accessory in your carry-on.
Simply saying, “I checked my email between mojitos” isn’t going to cut it.
✅ What Makes a Trip Deductible:
To properly claim travel expenses, you need to prove:
The primary purpose of the trip was business
There were scheduled meetings, conferences, or client work
You kept records of dates, locations, people involved, and purpose
The expenses were reasonable (no $1,200 spa days unless you're in the spa business)
And yes—if you're mixing business with pleasure (a.k.a. blended trips), only the business portion is deductible.
Your partner’s airfare (unless they’re an employee and working too)
Your kids’ Disney tickets (no, they’re not clients)
Personal excursions, upgrades, or souvenirs
Hotel nights before/after the business portion ends
✅ Attending a 3-day industry conference in Vancouver with proof of registration, hotel invoice, and flight? Good. 🚫 Booking 7 days in Vancouver and going to the conference for an hour on Day 2? Not so much.
😂 Tax Chuckle of the Week:
Q: What do you call a laptop on a beach towel? A: A tax deduction waiting to be denied.
