I Can Write Off My Dog... Right?

🐶 The Myth: “My dog guards my home office, so I can deduct his kibble, vet bills, and doggy yoga classes… right?” We love your pooch—we really do. In fact, we’d argue your French Bulldog probably has more personality than most CEOs. But before you try claiming Sir Barks-a-Lot as a legitimate business expense, let’s clear the air (and the fur).

🚫 The Truth: Unless your pup is a working animal (think: trained security dog, livestock herder, or government sniffer dog), the CRA won’t let you deduct pet expenses. Just because your Chihuahua yaps at the Amazon delivery guy doesn’t mean she’s a business security system. (Although, kudos for the enthusiasm.)

📝 Legit Pet Write-Offs (in rare cases): You may be able to claim pet-related expenses if:

You own a farm or rural business and the dog is used for livestock protection

Your business requires specialized animal care, like guard dog services with documented training and purpose

You employ the dog (not joking) and can demonstrate its business role with actual CRA-audit-worthy proof

But for the average small business or freelancer? Nope. That golden retriever who lounges beside your desk is cute, but not deductible.

💡 What Is Deductible for Your Business: Let’s not throw the whole tax bone away. You might still be able to deduct things like:

Home office expenses (portion of rent, utilities, internet, etc.)

Business-use-of-vehicle (log those km!)

Accounting and legal fees (hello 👋)

Marketing and advertising (your website, social media ads, branded ballpoint pens no one uses)

Just… leave the chew toys out of it.

😂 Tax Chuckle of the Week: Q: Why did the accountant adopt a guard dog? A: Because the CRA wouldn't let him expense a moat.

✅ Ford & Associates Pro Tip: If you’re ever unsure what counts as a business expense, just ask us. We’d rather laugh with you now than cry with you later (during a CRA review). And remember: if your pet has a T4, you’ve probably gone too far.
