“Tax rules are confusing. If I don’t understand them, they can’t possibly apply to me... right?”

This is what we call the ostrich strategy: bury your head in the sand and hope the CRA can’t find you. It’s adorable. It’s also incredibly risky.

CRA doesn’t grade on a curve. Whether you’re a seasoned CFO or someone who thinks a “T2” is a robot from a Schwarzenegger movie—you’re still expected to comply.

“But I didn’t know!” CRA: “That’s unfortunate. Here’s your penalty.”

🧾 Ignorance is Not Exemption:

If you earn income, run a business, own a rental, pay employees, collect GST/HST, or claim deductions—you are expected to understand the rules. Or hire someone who does.

Not knowing how payroll remittances work doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for missing them. And thinking “capital cost allowance” sounds boring doesn’t mean you don’t have to calculate it.

🚩 Common Signs of the Ostrich Strategy:

Assuming tax slips magically file themselves

Not asking questions because “it’s probably fine”

Declaring “I’m too busy for bookkeeping” while scrolling memes

Hoping CRA won’t notice you (they will)

Googling tax advice at 11:45pm on April 29th

You don’t need to know every line of the Income Tax Act—but you do need to take ownership of your business and financial life.
