I'm Too Small for the CRA to Notice Me

🐟 The Myth:  “I’m just a small business—I fly under the radar. CRA only audits big companies.” That’s cute. The CRA doesn’t care if you’re a solo Etsy shop owner or the CEO of Maple Syrup Incorporated. If you file taxes in Canada, you’re on their radar. Full stop. (And yes, they have spreadsheets. Beautiful, terrifying spreadsheets.)

🎯 The Reality: The CRA doesn’t choose audits based on fame or follower count. They have a variety of triggers, including:

Claiming large expenses for a small business

Repeated losses year after year

“Unusual” write-offs (looking at you, drone you tried to deduct as ‘marketing equipment’)

Tips from third parties (sometimes… jealous competitors or angry exes)

Even if your annual income is modest, your file can still raise red flags if it doesn’t make sense.

📱 Social Media ≠ Secret Don’t forget—your public persona is public. CRA agents do, in fact, check social media. If your Instagram shows you living your best life in Bali while your tax return says you made $18,000... well, that dog doesn’t hunt. Pro tip: Your feed should match your filings.

💬 “But I Thought I Was Safe!” There’s no such thing as a “safe size.” In fact, small businesses and sole proprietors are audited more often—because many file their own taxes or miss key compliance steps. The CRA isn’t targeting you. They’re just doing their job. And if your file stands out like a sore thumb with glitter on it, they’ll take a peek.

😂 Tax Chuckle of the Week: Q: Why did the CRA agent join Instagram? A: To follow the money.
