My Side Hustle Doesn't Count If I'm Paid in Cash

💵 The Myth: “If I’m paid in cash, the CRA doesn’t need to know about it.” Ah yes, the old “cash is invisible” tax theory—brought to you by the same people who think they can outrun a CRA audit with a burner phone and a box of Tim Hortons receipts. Whether you sell art on Etsy, mow lawns on the weekend, or tutor high school math students for $20/hour and a box of Timbits—if you’re earning money, it’s income. Period.
🕵️ The Reality: The CRA doesn’t care how you’re paid—they care that you’re paid. Cash is not a tax-free currency. It’s not an invisibility cloak. And it certainly doesn’t exempt you from income reporting just because you “didn’t get a T4.” If you earned it, report it. If you didn’t, don’t—but also don’t post about it on TikTok with hashtags like #CashOnly or #CRAWho.
🔍 Examples of Side Hustles That Count as Taxable Income:
Babysitting or dog walking (yes, even for your neighbour)
Freelance design or consulting work
Making and selling crafts or food
Tutoring, teaching music, or coaching
Rent from Airbnb or subletting your basement to your cousin Brad
Even if it's part-time, casual, or started as a “favour for a friend,” CRA considers it business income—and so should you.
🤷 “But there’s no paper trail!” CRA has a very good nose for unreported income. Random lifestyle audits, whistleblowers, or inconsistent GST/HST returns can all raise red flags. They’re not psychic—but they are thorough. Especially if your reported income is $17K and your Instagram shows you flying business class to Barbados.
Track your income – yes, even the crumpled $20s
Keep receipts for expenses (gas, supplies, advertising)
Report it on your tax return under self-employment income (T2125)
You'll thank yourself come tax time—especially if you're ever hoping to qualify for a mortgage, car loan, or, you know... avoid tax penalties.
😂 Tax Chuckle of the Week: Q: Why did the side hustler keep his money in a shoebox? A: Because he thought the CRA wouldn’t look under the bed.
