I Don't Need Receipts - My Bank Statement Is Enough

Money Myths & Tax Facts Series – Ford & Associates

“I don’t need to keep receipts. I’ve got my bank and credit card statements!”

Look, we love a well-organized bank feed as much as the next accountant. But if you think a line that says “$45 – Walmart” counts as proof, the CRA would like a word.

(And no, saying, “I swear it was office supplies!” doesn’t help.)

Bank and credit card statements only show the transaction occurred—not what you bought, why, or if it was business-related.

CRA wants to see itemized receipts that prove:

Why it’s business-related

Otherwise, it’s just a vague expense—and during an audit, vague = denied.

Let’s say your statement says:

“Jan 14 – Amazon.ca – $103.42”

Without a receipt, the CRA has no idea if that was printer ink (✅) or Pokémon cards (❌).

Even if it was legit, you can’t prove it without a detailed receipt. That’s the difference between a valid deduction and a CRA adjustment letter that ruins your week.

📦 What Counts as a Receipt?

Scanned copies (yes, digital is fine!)

Clearly itemized email receipts

Receipts with business context written on them (e.g. “Client lunch with Josh – March 12”)

What doesn’t count? A Visa charge and your memory.

If you’re mixing business and personal on one card, receipts help you split the difference.

“$200 at Costco” could be toner and tax folders… …or it could be snacks, socks, and a pool noodle.

Receipts protect you—and your write-offs.

😂 Tax Chuckle of the Week:

Q: What’s worse than being audited? A: Being audited without receipts.

✅ Ford & Associates Pro Tip:
